History of the Joslyn Center

Incorporated in 1981 as an independent non-profit corporation, the Joslyn Senior Center has helped seniors in Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert to remain independent and active. The current center was built in 1984 through Community Development Block Grant funds and a donation from the Joslyn Foundation.

The importance of our role in the community is demonstrated by the fact that the cities we serve have the highest percentage of their residents over the age of 60. According to the Riverside County Office on Aging, 24% of the residents of the entire Coachella Valley are 60 years of age or older. In the cities of Indian Wells, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage 36% of the residents are over 60 and this number is expected to increase each year. .

Membership dues are $20 annually and provide discounts to those activities with a fee. Adults over 50 are eligible for membership and may be residents of any city; over 3,000 seniors currently are members.

80 different classes and activities are scheduled each week and more are added each month. Almost half of these programs are free, making them available to seniors of all income levels. Services include nutrition programs, support groups, counseling services, free tax and legal services, computer classes, fitness classes, music and dance programs, social activities, bridge and other table games, special events, arts and crafts, Spanish classes and educational seminars.

The Center is funded in part through the Cove Communities Service Commission, which is comprised of representatives from the three cities we serve; Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert. The remaining funds are raised through membership dues, program fees, room rentals, special events, grants, individual donations and interest income from the endowment fund.

A 16 member Board of Directors guides three full-time and fourteen part-time staff. The Center provides services to its members and the other community organizations and businesses that utilize the facility seven days per week. The center is open Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
